adults who ate walnuts regularly performed significantly better on a series of six cognitive function tests than adults who did not eat walnuts, according to a new study published in the online Journal of Nutrition, Health and Aging.
In the cross-sectional study, researchers investigated the link between walnut consumption and cognitive function in areas including memory, concentration, and information processing speed. They did so using cognitive data from several National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys involving two age groups: participants age 29-59 and those 60 and older.
“Significantly better outcomes were noted in all cognitive test scores among those with higher walnut consumption,” researchers reported regarding the younger of the groups.
Among participants 60 and older, researchers found similar results with the exception of the Simple Reaction Time test.
“It isn’t every day that research results in such simple advice,” said lead researcher Lenore Arab, PhD, of the school of medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles. “Eating a handful of walnuts daily as a snack, or as part of a meal, can help improve your cognitive health.”
